A Great While Before Day

Mark 1:35Study and small group

$24.00
You are up before the house, the kettle on, the one hour of the day that nobody else has asked for yet. Above the small desk in the corner there is a dry valley at first light, and one small figure sitting in it, far from any door. It gives the corner a reason to be there. It is silent but very effective, better than words on a wall. Visitors read it as a landscape first, and then you get to say what it is, in your own words.

Mark 1:35 print

Something quiet to sit down under

From across the room it reads as a landscape: a stony hollow at first light, pale ground, the hills still holding the night. Then you find the figure. One small white shape, sitting low in the valley, a good distance from everything.

Nobody in it is hurrying, and nobody is coming to fetch him. The hill keeps the town out of sight. Living with it, the corner stops being a spare corner. It becomes the place you sit down, because the wall above it is already doing the same thing.

One friend sees a person who has walked out of the town before light and sat down alone. Another sees a dry valley at first light with one small figure in it. Someone else sees the place a person goes when they need to be unreachable for an hour, and says she would like one of those. It says you pray, with no folded hands anywhere in the frame.

The light begins where he is sitting

Arrivals and still places

I keep going back to the figure. He is small and white and sitting low, and the light does not arrive on him so much as begin there. The hills are still dark at the top. The ground is dry and pale and ordinary, the kind of place nobody would choose, and he has chosen it. There is a distance between him and the edge of the town that I like leaving unmeasured.

What I keep looking at is the stillness just before the light reaches the whole valley. Nothing has happened yet. I hope whoever hangs this finds the same pause waiting when she sits down under it, an hour nobody is calling into, a quiet that holds.

For her, and from someone who is for her

Close view of the pale valley and the single small white figure

One woman buys it for herself in the first week of a new year, when she has decided the early hour is going to hold this time. She is not asking permission. She has worked out that trusting in the Lord is a real verb thing, and this is part of the doing: a chair, a lamp, a corner set apart, something on the wall that is not another list.

The other is a husband, or a sister, who knows she is getting up in the dark and wants to say plainly that he is for it. There is nothing to explain when she opens it. Her home should make her happy and be a reflection of her, and this is one small vote for the part of her that gets up before anyone else.

It hangs above the small desk in the corner where she reads before the house wakes, at 45x60 cm, or as a pair with Come and See.

The early hour

What people ask about this one

1.Where did Jesus go to pray early in the morning in Mark 1 35?
Mark says only that he rose a great while before day, went out, and departed into a solitary place. No name is given to it, and it sits just after a long evening of healing at the door in Capernaum. The piece imagines a dry hollow out of sight of the houses, which is one reading of a deserted place and not the only one.
2.Why did Jesus pray alone before day?
The text gives the time and the going apart, and leaves the reason unsaid. Some read it as habit, some as the only hour nobody could reach him. The painting keeps both open: one figure, a long way from the town, and nothing in the frame that decides it for you.
3.How do moms of young kids find time to pray?
Most say the same thing: the hour before the house wakes is the only one that stays theirs. That quiet time is worth guarding, and having a corner set apart for it helps the habit survive a hard week. This piece was made for that corner, so leaving the bed in the dark feels less like something you have to justify.
4.What size print works above a small desk?
The 45x60 cm is the one made for a desk corner: large enough to hold the wall, small enough not to lean over you while you read. The 30x40 cm suits a narrow space beside a window or a shelf. The 60x80 cm is for a wider wall in a study or a room where a small group gathers.
5.Will this look too religious to guests?
Visitors read it as a landscape first, a valley at dawn with one small figure in it. The reference line is the only anchor, and nobody has to take it up. When someone does ask, you get to answer in your own words rather than having the wall answer for you.
