A Well of Water Springing Up

John 4:14Kitchen

$24.00
Some seasons start before anyone else is up. The kettle, the quiet, the ten minutes that belong to you before the day asks for its first thing. On the wall by the sink there is a small painted map: two roads part, and one of them bends down to a well where two people have stopped to talk in the middle of the day. It is the one thing in this room that asks nothing of you. Friends lean in over their coffee and ask what it is, and you get to tell them in your own words.

Kitchen bible verse wall art John 4

The one wall in this room that is yours

Step closer and the country opens out. Pale hills, a road the colour of dust, a second road leaving it at a small angle and going down, the way roads do when they know where the water is. At the bottom there is a well, one round mark of blue in a whole dry land.

Two figures stand beside it in the flat light of noon. Neither of them is leaving. Whatever is said there stays between them, and that is the use of it: you can look at it every morning and it never finishes.

One person sees a traveller who took the road nobody takes. Another sees two people talking at a well in the middle of the day, when nobody else goes out. A guest who does not share the faith sees the one spring of water in a dry country and asks where it came from, and the room has already answered for you: this is a home where something is held quietly.

The short road bends down to the water

Roads seen from above

From up here the land is mostly road. One line runs on toward the town, sure of itself, and a shorter line leaves it and drops away to the left, down a slope, to the one blue mark in the whole picture. I keep following that second line. It is the way nobody needed to go. I keep looking at how small the two figures are beside the water, and how long they stay there.

What I hope is this. That whoever lives with this map finds the short road early in the day, before the long one starts asking. That the well stays where it is. That the water in it is not something she has to carry in from anywhere else.

Kitchen scripture print gift

Two kitchens, and one of them is not yours

One woman buys it for herself. She plans a meaningful scripture for the day that she rests upon and prays upon, and she would rather have it as a picture than as a sentence on a board. She is first awake, she wants something warm to look at while the coffee goes through, and she is finished with anything that reads like a sign.

The other buys it for a friend whose kitchen is the room everyone ends up sitting in. That friend says she truly does not want stuff, she has everything she needs and no space for more, so this goes in the box instead: something to look at, not another thing to keep track of.

It hangs at 45x60 cm on the wall she faces at the sink, beside the window, as the left panel of three.

What people ask before it goes up

1.What bible verse is good for a kitchen wall?
Many people choose a line about water for the room where the water runs and the day begins. This piece carries John 4:14, from the conversation at the well in Samaria. It sits well where you stand for a few minutes at a time, at the sink or beside the kettle.
2.What does a well of water springing up mean?
The words come from John 4, where a traveller stops at Jacob's well at noon and speaks with a woman who has come out for water. We print the reference and leave the meaning where it belongs, with you. Some see the road nobody takes, some see the two figures talking, some see the one spring in a dry country.
3.Is there scripture wall art that is not typography?
Yes, and this is one. It is a painted map seen from above, with no lettering in the scene and only the verse reference as a small anchor. Guests read it as a picture first and ask about it, which is usually how the conversation starts.
4.Which size fits above a kitchen sink?
45x60 cm suits most sink walls and holds its own next to a window. 30x40 cm works on a narrow strip of wall, or beside a cot in a child's room. 60x80 cm is for a wide open wall where nothing else is competing with it.
