Luke 24:29Kitchen

$24.00
The dining space is new, and your table is already the place people stay longest: the plates pushed back, the talk going on well past the food. On the wall beside it hangs a print of a village settling for the night, the lamps going out one by one, and one house where the lamp is still burning for someone still on the road. It is a quiet thing to eat under. Friends look at it before they notice the reference, and ask, and you get to tell them what your table means to you.

Kitchen scripture print gift Luke 24

One house is still expecting someone

Look at it from across the room, once the plates are cleared and the chairs are pushed back in. From up here the village is small: roofs in rows, the road coming in off the fields, most of the windows already dark.

Three figures are still walking, near the end of that road. One roof holds a small gold light, a lamp somebody has kept burning because the evening is not finished yet. That is what living with it gives you: a house still expecting someone, hanging where you feed people.

One friend sees a village settling for the night with one window left awake. Another sees three travellers arriving at the end of a long road. A guest who does not share the faith sees only the last lamp lit on a street where everyone else has gone in, and asks about it, and since church is the hardest place to get to know someone, you tell her about the table instead. Either way it says the same thing about this home: people are known here.

Roads seen from above

I keep coming back to the last stretch of that road. From up here you can see how far they have walked, how the fields let go of the light before the village does, how the path bends once more and then the houses begin. Everything is going quiet. One roof is not.

The small gold window is the whole map for me. It sits low, off to the side, and the road leans toward it without pointing at it. What I hope, for whoever eats under this, is that the distance behind them stops feeling long. Somebody kept a light on at the end of it. They are nearly there, and the latch is already off the door.

Scripture print gift

The one gift she has no excuse to store away

Some women buy it for their own table. She has just moved, the dining wall is bare, and everything she has found so far is lettering about daily bread. She wants the wall beside the food to hold something people can look at while they talk, not a slogan she will have read out by the second week.

Others buy it for a friend. The friend has said it plainly: I have everything I need, I have no space for more. So the guest arrives with one framed piece instead of a basket of things, and it goes up that weekend, and it is the gift still on the wall a year later.

It hangs beside the dining table, and at 60x80 cm it holds the middle of a three-print kitchen wall.

What people ask about the road and the table

1.What is a good Christian housewarming gift for a kitchen?
One framed piece for the wall beside the table, rather than a set of small things she has to find room for. A scene works better there than lettering, because guests can look at it for a while and ask about it. Most people choose the 45x60 cm size for a gift, and the 60x80 cm when the dining wall is wide and bare.
2.What happened on the road to Emmaus?
In Luke 24, two travellers walk from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus on the evening of the third day. A stranger joins them along the road, and when they reach the village they ask him to stay, because the day is nearly over. He sits down at their table, breaks the bread, and they know him. That is the moment this scene is drawn from, seen from the hill above the village.
3.What size print goes beside a dining table?
Beside a table that seats four to six, 45x60 cm sits comfortably on its own, and 60x80 cm is the size that holds the wall without crowding it. Hang the centre about 145 to 150 cm from the floor, so it reads at eye level when people are standing and talking. If it is the middle piece of three, the 60x80 cm is the one to put in the centre.
4.What can I say when I give it as a hostess gift?
Something short is enough: that her table is where people actually get known, and this is a village at nightfall with one lamp still on for someone on the road. You can name Luke 24 on the card and leave the rest to her. She will have her own reading of it by the time it is on the wall.
