Carry Them in His Bosom

Isaiah 40:11Nursery

$24.00
You carry everyone all day. The bags, the bottles, the small person who only settles on your shoulder. Above the feeding chair there is a picture of a child being lifted out of a crowd of women and handed on, and nobody in it is hurrying. At two in the morning it is something warm to look at while the house is dark. It stays when the cot goes, and the boy keeps it. Friends stop in front of it and ask where it came from, and you get to say what you see in it.

Nursery bible verse wall art Isaiah 40

Nothing is asked of the one being carried

From across the room it reads as warmth before it reads as anything else. A group of women in loose robes, arms full, a child lifted above them, and one white figure taking the weight. No faces, so nothing is decided for you. The light gathers where the child is handed over.

Under a lamp at night it stays soft, and it is still the right picture years from now, when the cot goes out and a small bed comes in.

One friend sees a child handed over and already safe. Another sees a mother letting go of the weight for a second, which is the reason she came and stood in front of it. Someone else sees a group of women bringing what they have, the way your own small group turns up with meals and prayers. Nobody agrees, and the room is better for it. It is a picture that belongs to the house, not to a season of it.

The light finds the child first

Arrivals and still places

I keep coming back to the space between the arms. The child is not set down and not quite held either. He is in the air for one second, and the light reaches him there before it reaches anyone else. The white figure seems to be where that light is coming from, though I could not tell you how. Below, the women stand close together with their hands open.

What I hope for whoever lives with this: that on a long night it is the softest thing in the room, and that the weight you are carrying feels, for a moment, like something being received rather than something being held.

Nursery scripture print gift

The one gift on the table that is not clothes

You are going to the shower and you do not want another pack of sleepsuits or a pastel cartoon rabbit that nobody keeps. This one goes on the table wrapped flat, and on the card you write that decorating the nursery is for her too, and that it moves easily to his next room when the time comes.

Or you buy it for your own house, for the shared room, after years of tearful prayers about being parents at all. You wanted a warm soothing colour and something to look at while feeding the baby in the middle of the night. This does both, and it keeps doing it long after the night feeds stop.

It hangs as the right-hand panel of a three-print wall beside the feeding chair, low enough to be in view from the chair.

Baby shower and dedication

What comes up before the gift is wrapped

1.What bible verse is good for a baby's room?
This one carries Isaiah 40:11, He shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom. It sits in the chapter that opens with comfort, which is why the scene is a child being lifted rather than a child walking. The words are short enough for a small person to learn later, and gentle enough to live with at three in the morning.
2.What is a good gift for a baby dedication?
Something the family keeps after the day itself. This is chosen most often by a friend from the small group or an aunt who does not want to add to the pile of clothes. On the card, people tend to write the verse line and one sentence about why they picked this scene for this child.
3.What nursery art can move to a toddler room?
Art that was never nursery decor to begin with. There are no cartoon animals and no pastel alphabet here, only figures and light, so it reads the same above a cot, above a small bed, and later above a desk. Plenty of people buy it for a shared room for exactly that reason.
4.Which size suits the wall beside the feeding chair?
The 24x32 in / 60x80 cm framed is the one made for that spot, hung low enough to be seen from the chair. The 18x24 in / 45x60 cm works as one panel of three on a wider wall. The smallest, 12x16 in / 30x40 cm, suits a narrow strip beside a door or a changing table.
5.Can a piece like this feel too grown up for a baby?
The scene is warm, round and soft in colour, and babies look at contrast and shape long before they look at detail. The faces are left out, so there is nothing sharp or fixed for a child to read. It is quiet enough for a nursery and still holds its own in a hallway years later.
