The fire was lit before anyone came ashore
From across the room it is mostly light. The sand is pale, the water still holds the night, and a small fire of coals sits low on the shore with the smoke going straight up. One boat is drawn up and empty, its rope slack on the sand. The figures are far off, and the nearest one has stopped walking.
Hung over the place where the food gets made, it lets the feeding feel like something more than chores. The room is quiet in the morning, and so is the picture.
One friend calls it a breakfast already made before anyone arrives. Another sees a boat brought in after a night that caught nothing, pulled up while it was still dark. Someone else sees only an empty shore at the hour before questions, and says it looks like new mercies every single morning. None of them are wrong, and nobody has ever called it churchy.

The two people who take this one home

One buys it for herself, usually around the first meal cooked in a new place, with boxes still in the hall and the oven not yet worked out. She will tell you she does not want stuff, that she has everything she needs and no space for more. This goes up anyway, before the plates are unpacked.
The other buys it for a wedding, a new house, or for the woman who has fed a family through a hard season and never got fed herself. She writes something short in the card, bless this home and the people who eat here, and lets the shore say the rest.
It lives in the kitchen, on the wall above the sideboard at the dining end, the 60x80 cm sitting at the centre of the morning wall.
