Come and Dine

John 21:12Kitchen

$24.00
Some weeks you cook for everyone and nobody says much at the table. The lunches get made, the pots get washed, and the feeding just keeps going. Above the sideboard at the dining end there is a shore at first light, a small fire of coals on the sand, one boat drawn up. Nothing in it is hurrying. It makes the place where you feed people feel like more than chores. Guests see a coastal painting and ask where it is from, and you get to tell them what you see in it.

The fire was lit before anyone came ashore

From across the room it is mostly light. The sand is pale, the water still holds the night, and a small fire of coals sits low on the shore with the smoke going straight up. One boat is drawn up and empty, its rope slack on the sand. The figures are far off, and the nearest one has stopped walking.

Hung over the place where the food gets made, it lets the feeding feel like something more than chores. The room is quiet in the morning, and so is the picture.

One friend calls it a breakfast already made before anyone arrives. Another sees a boat brought in after a night that caught nothing, pulled up while it was still dark. Someone else sees only an empty shore at the hour before questions, and says it looks like new mercies every single morning. None of them are wrong, and nobody has ever called it churchy.

The smoke goes straight up, so the air is still

Arrivals and still places

I keep coming back to the smoke. It goes straight up, which means the air is still, and the day has not started asking anything yet. The fire is small. Someone lit it before the boat came in, and whoever lit it is not in the frame. The water still holds the colour of the night, the sand has begun to take the light, and between them runs that thin line where the morning decides to arrive.

The boat is what I look at last. Drawn up, rope slack, nothing in it. I hope whoever hangs this finds the shore already warm at the end of a long stretch of feeding people, and that the room she works hardest in keeps one wall that asks nothing back.

The two people who take this one home

One buys it for herself, usually around the first meal cooked in a new place, with boxes still in the hall and the oven not yet worked out. She will tell you she does not want stuff, that she has everything she needs and no space for more. This goes up anyway, before the plates are unpacked.

The other buys it for a wedding, a new house, or for the woman who has fed a family through a hard season and never got fed herself. She writes something short in the card, bless this home and the people who eat here, and lets the shore say the rest.

It lives in the kitchen, on the wall above the sideboard at the dining end, the 60x80 cm sitting at the centre of the morning wall.

What people ask about this one

1.What is the story of Jesus making breakfast on the shore?
It is John 21, near the very end of the gospel. The disciples have fished all night and caught nothing, and at daybreak they see a fire of coals on the beach with fish already on it and bread beside it. Jesus says come and dine. The scene here is that shore at first light, before anyone has spoken.
2.What scripture print is good for a dining wall?
Something with a low horizon and a lot of quiet in it, so it can hang near a table without competing with the food. This one is a still landscape: pale sand, water, one small fire, one boat. In the 60x80 cm it centres a dining wall on its own, and the 45x60 suits a narrower stretch above a sideboard.
3.What is a good christian wedding gift for the kitchen?
A piece for the room the couple will actually live in, which is usually the one with the table in it. This is often given for a wedding or a housewarming, and just as often as a thank you to the woman who keeps cooking for everyone. A line in the card about the home and the people who will eat there is enough.
4.Will it look churchy in my kitchen?
No text is printed on the image. A guest sees a coastal morning, a small fire and a boat, and usually asks who painted it. You can say as much or as little about John 21 as you want to.
