He Giveth His Beloved Sleep

Psalm 127:2Bedroom

$24.00
The house is quiet by eleven and you are still awake, running the list one more time in the dark. Above the chest of drawers there is a print of cut fields at dusk, a path worn through the stubble, one roof still holding the last of the light. Nothing in it is hurrying. Nothing in it is waiting on you to finish. It is the restful wall in the house, the one thing you look at when the day is finally down, and nobody who stops in front of it would guess the verse behind it is about giving up on staying awake.

Psalm 127 2

The fields are cut, and one house is waiting

From the bed it reads as a field at the end of a working day. The rows are cut and stacked, the light has slid off the ground and caught one roof, and a path goes through the stubble toward it.

Two small figures are on that path, already most of the way along. Nobody in the scene is still working. It gives you something calm to rest your eyes on when the day is down and sleep has not come yet, and it asks nothing back.

People read it differently. One sees the fields cut and the day over and one house lit and waiting. Another follows the path home through the stubble and the two small people walking it. A third keeps finding the last sheaf standing out in a field nobody came back for, and decides that is allowed. However it is read, the room settles around it.

I keep coming back to the path. It leaves the bottom of the field and bends twice before it reaches the house, and the two who walk it are small enough to cover with a thumb. From up here you can see the whole distance they still have, and you can see that it is not far. The light has gone from the stubble but not from the roof. Somebody left it on.

One sheaf is still standing out in the open, and nobody came back for it. I like that it stays there. What I hope this map gives the one who lives with it is simple: the way home is already walked, the field is already cut, and there is nothing left out there tonight that needs her.

Some women choose it for themselves, late, after a stretch of nights that would not end. Her heart has learned to stand guard: the list, the monitor, the door that needs checking once more. What she wants on the wall facing the bed is not another instruction, just something that lets her be aware of fear and more conscious of peace.

Others choose it for a friend who is not sleeping, after a baby or a hard winter, instead of asking again how she is doing. It says the thing that is awkward to say out loud, that sometimes God wants you to rest too, and it goes on saying it on the nights nobody is awake to say anything. It is silent, and better than words.

It hangs above the chest of drawers facing the bed, often paired with its morning companion from Mark 1:35, so the evening and the morning hang together.

After a hard season

What people ask before it goes on the wall

1.What bible verse is right for a new mom who is exhausted?
Psalm 127:2 is the one this piece carries, the line about sleep given to the beloved. It says nothing about doing more, which is why it tends to land well in a first year. As christian wall art for a nursery it stays gentle, with the reference line as the only text in the scene.
2.What size print works beside a nursery glider?
30x40 cm / 12x16 in is the size most people choose for the wall next to a chair, where it reads from close up without crowding the lamp. 45x60 cm / 18x24 in suits a wall she looks at from across the room. 60x80 cm / 24x32 in comes as an unframed print only.
3.Is the paper archival?
The print only version is a sheet of 250 gsm uncoated off white archival paper, with no border and no frame. The framed version is printed on 170 gsm coated silk paper. Both are giclee prints, made to order.
4.Does the frame come with glass?
The framed option has a plexiglass front rather than glass, set in a black wood frame with a flat square profile 12 mm wide and 22 mm deep, matte finish. There is no mat, so the scene runs to the inner edge of the frame. It arrives ready to hang as scripture wall art.
5.Is this a good baby shower gift for the mother instead of the baby?
That is who it was made for. It goes into a care package or a shower pile as the one parcel addressed to her, next to everything sized for the baby. Friends tend to pick it as a new mom gift when they want something thoughtful rather than another candle or mug.
6.Does the print have any words on it?
Only the verse reference line, set small. There is no slogan across the front and no faces in the scene, so a guest who does not share the faith sees a mother, a child and someone kneeling close. She can answer in her own words, or not at all.
