He Ran to Meet Him

Luke 15:20Hallway

$24.00
Some years you set the table for one fewer, and you keep telling the same parable to anyone who asks how he is. Above the shoe bench there is a print of a road crossing worked fields toward a house, and two small marks meeting a long way from the door. You walk past it twice a day and it says the door is open without saying anything. It is one real piece of art up there instead of a carved family name sign, and guests stop and look for the two small figures and ask what they are.

Hallway bible verse wall art Luke 15

The door is open and nobody has to say so

From across the hall it is mostly field: a road going up through worked strips of land, thin hedges, a house with its gate open at the top of the rise. Then you find the pair on the road, closer to each other than to anywhere else, and the whole map turns toward them.

Nothing in it hurries you. You pass it with an armful of coats and it holds the same thought it held yesterday, which is that someone is already on the way out to meet the one coming back.

One friend sees only the road and says she is going through a wilderness season herself. Another sees two figures about to meet, a long way from home. Someone else notices the household still at work in the yard while one person runs out through the gate. Nobody agrees, and the hall is better for it.

You can see the whole road from here

Roads seen from above

I keep coming back to the gap. From up here you can see the whole road at once, how it leaves the low ground, bends once past the hedges, and climbs the last stretch to the gate. Two marks on it, small as seeds. One is walking. One is running. There is still field between them, and that little bit of field is the part I cannot look away from.

Everything else in the picture stays busy. The yard, the strips of worked ground, the door standing open at the top. What I hope, for whoever lives with this map, is that the distance stops looking long. That the eye goes to the gate first, and the running, and finds the road shorter than it was yesterday.

Hallway scripture print gift

One hangs it in her own hall, one wraps it

One of them is praying for a grown child. She keeps saying the same thing to friends and to herself: he did not stand at the door asking where he had been, he ran toward him. She puts it where the family comes in, and it holds that sentence for her so she does not have to keep saying it out loud.

The other is looking for something to bring to a first house, or to another mother in the same long season. Her friend has already told her she has everything she needs and no space for more, so she brings one thing meant for one wall.

It hangs on the entry wall above the shoe bench, at eye level from the doormat, the first of the two hall pieces read as one journey.

What people ask about this one

1.What verse is good for an entryway wall?
Luke 15:20 sits well by a door, because it is a verse about one person coming home and another going out to meet him. Here it is a road, a house with its gate open at the top of the rise, and two small figures meeting on the way. Guests read it as a journey, and the family reads it as their own.
2.What does the father running in the prodigal son story mean?
In Luke 15 the father sees him a great way off and runs. People who keep returning to it often notice what he does not do: he does not stand at the door asking where his son had been. What the running means stays with the reader, and this map leaves it open, with the field still showing between the two figures.
3.What should I hang above a hallway bench instead of a mirror?
One real piece of art at eye level does more above a bench than a mirror or a carved family name sign. The 18x24 in / 45x60 cm framed size is the one made for that spot. At eye level from the doormat it reads as you come in, and it still reads from the far end of the hall.
4.Is this a good gift for a family moving into their first house?
Yes, and it is also what one mother gives another who is praying for an adult child. The 45x60 cm framed size is the usual pick for a hall or an entry. The card can say very little, because the picture holds the open door for you.
