He Stood by Them

Genesis 18:8Kitchen

$24.00
Yours is the house where people get fed. The friend between flats, the couple from church you barely know, whoever turns up on a Tuesday: the table gets longer rather than fuller. Above the long worktable there is a picture of a table laid outdoors under one broad tree, a dish set out, one figure standing while the others eat. It stays still while everything else is being carried in and out. It holds what you care about without a single word of lettering, and people stop in front of it and ask where it came from.

Abraham and the three visitors

The shade of one tree doing the work of a whole house

From the sink you see it sideways. A low table in the shade, bowls already set out, the plain going pale and wide behind it. The light comes in late from the left, the kind that lands on a cloth and makes it look softer than it is.

Nobody in it is hurrying. The seats are taken, one figure stays on his feet near the edge of the shade, and the road behind them is left open in case somebody else comes up it. What it gives you is one wall in the kitchen that wants nothing from you: no list, no reminder, just a meal laid and room left over.

People read it differently, which is half the pleasure of it. A friend sees a table laid outdoors for whoever comes up the road. Someone else sees a man standing while his guests eat and cannot decide whether he is waiting or simply glad. A third notices that one tree is doing the work of a whole house. You answer in your own words, and the room it hangs in has already said what kind of home this is before anyone sits down.

The light reaches the cloth first

Arrivals and still places

I keep coming back to the standing figure. Everyone else is seated and settled, and he stays on his feet at the edge of the shade, half in the light, as if sitting down would end something he wants to last a little longer. The light reaches the cloth first, then the one gold dish. Beyond the tree the plain goes on and the road stays empty, and I like that it stays empty: the arrival has happened, and another one could.

What I hope, for whoever hangs this: that the room it ends up in keeps a little of that unhurried standing. That there is always one more place at the table than there are people, and nobody notices it being set.

Genesis 18

The friend who always lays an extra place

The framed print seen close, above a long kitchen worktable

One woman buys it for her own kitchen. She has just moved in, the boxes are mostly gone, and the first thing she wants up is the thing she cares about most: welcoming those into your home who need help or food, held there without a slogan. Her home should look like her, and this is the part of her that never fits into a sentence.

The other buys it at a housewarming, for the friend whose table gets longer rather than fuller. She remembers last winter at that table, when they all squeezed together and no one complained. It is an easy thing to hand over, because it looks like something from a gallery rather than a church shop, and the person unwrapping it understands it straight away.

It hangs above the dresser, or over the long worktable where the food goes out, and the 60x80 cm framed size holds that wall without crowding it.

What people ask about this one

1.Who were the three visitors Abraham fed in Genesis 18?
Genesis 18 tells of three men who come to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre in the heat of the day. He runs to meet them, has bread and a calf prepared, sets it before them and stands by them under the tree while they eat. Scripture calls them men, and then one of them speaks as the Lord, and readers have held both of those for a very long time. The picture leaves it where scripture leaves it.
2.What does entertaining angels unawares refer to?
The phrase comes from Hebrews 13:2, which looks back to this meal under the tree. It is why Abraham's table is the scene people reach for when they think about keeping an open house. The print holds the moment rather than the explanation, so the meaning stays yours to tell.
3.What is a good Christian housewarming gift for the kitchen?
Something that says how the house will be used without instructing anyone. This one reads as a landscape with a meal in it, so it suits a first kitchen, a newly married couple or the friend who always lays an extra place. The 45x60 cm framed size travels well as a gift, and the 60x80 cm is the one for a long worktable.
4.Will it look too religious in an open-plan kitchen?
There is no lettering on it at all, and no verse printed across the image. Guests see a table in the shade of a tree, a plain behind it and a road left open, and they ask about it rather than read it. The reference sits with the piece, not on the wall, so you decide when it comes up.
