The hour before anyone else is awake
From the far side of the counter it is a slope of standing grain, pale gold, bending a little where the wind went through in the night. A ridge behind it. The sky above the ridge has turned from grey to something warmer, and the warmth has not reached the field yet.
Down near the path there is a lamp, and someone has put it out. Nothing else happens. It stays like that all day, which is the point: you look up from the sink at four in the afternoon and it is still the beginning of something. It gives the kitchen an hour that does not run out.
People read it differently. One friend sees a field that stood all night and is still standing, which she says is more or less her year. Another sees only the lamp, put out because the light came. Your sister sees the quiet hour before anyone else is awake and asks where you found it. Nobody needs it explained, and the room looks considered, which you did not expect from a picture of a field.

Two women, the same six a.m.

One buys it for herself, in the first week of a new routine. She let the early mornings go for a month, a wilderness season she does not say much about, and now the alarm is set again and reading through the year is her morning routine. She wants the wall beside the clock to agree with her about that.
The other buys it for a friend from Bible study, the one who says it is as much a support group as a Bible study. On the card she writes the sentence she has been meaning to say out loud for a while: I hope you see the new mercies of Christ every single morning.
It hangs in the kitchen, on the small wall beside the clock, where you stand to pour the coffee.

What people ask before it goes up
1.What bible verse is good for a kitchen wall?
2.What does his mercies are new every morning mean?
3.What art works on a small kitchen wall beside the clock?
4.Is this a good gift for a friend starting a new morning routine?
Tomorrow the kettle goes on at six either way
Three sizes, framed or unframed, so the field is up beside the clock before the next early morning.
