I Am the Vine

John 15:5Kitchen

$24.00
By the end of a study term you know what the group has been for you. It is as much a support group as a Bible study, and the woman who held it together has a house with enough stuff in it already. So the thank-you is one framed piece, on the kitchen wall by the table: vine rows seen from above, every row running back to one root. It gives her one wall instead of one more thing to find room for. People stop in front of it and ask, and she gets to tell them what the group was.

Study and small group scripture print gift, John 15

The whole field, laid out from above

It reads like a map. Rows of vines drawn from a little above, the way a field looks once you have climbed the hill behind it, green lines running out into the low light.

Come nearer and the rows all lean the same way. However far out a row begins, it bends and arrives at one root near the foot of the picture, and one small pale figure stands where they all come in. Nothing is labelled and nothing is spelled out. It gives the kitchen one quiet thing to rest on and asks nothing else of the room.

One person looks at it and sees rows of vines all running back to one root. Someone else sees workers arriving at the field at different hours, early and late, all of them in the same field by evening. Another stops on the pale figure and says nothing about it at all. Nobody needs to agree, which is why it sits well in a room where people talk for hours and no one is being told what to think.

From up here, the field makes sense

Roads seen from above

From up here the field is quiet and orderly, and I keep following the rows down. Whichever row I start on, near or far out at the edge, it turns in and arrives at the same place. That is the part I look at longest. Not the leaves. The turning.

One pale figure stands where the rows come together, small enough that you could walk past it without noticing, and it is not hurrying anywhere. I hope whoever lives with this map finds her own row on it, and sees how short the distance is from the far edge back to the middle, and how little of that walking she did on her own.

The thank-you that is not another mug

There is the group that has met around a kitchen table all term, and now the last week is here. They want one thank-you for the woman who hosted every time, and she has already told them what she wants: nothing, your house had enough stuff in it. So they choose one framed thing, for one wall, and sign a card instead of filling a basket.

And there is the woman who sat in that group and found it was the one place she was actually known. She buys it for her own kitchen, because that is the room where it happened, and she does not need a word printed on it to remember.

It hangs above the sideboard where the group sat, the 45x60 cm as the right panel of a three-print wall.

What people ask before they choose it

1.What is a good thank you gift for a bible study leader?
Something that goes on one wall, rather than one more thing to find room for. A framed piece works because it is a single object for a single place, and it keeps saying thank you long after the term ends. If the group signs one card with it, that is enough words.
2.What does abide in me mean in John 15?
John 15:5 is Jesus speaking to his friends about a vine and its branches. People read abide in different ways: staying near, staying joined, simply staying put. The picture leaves that open, with rows, one root and one small figure, and no line of text telling anyone what to conclude.
3.What should I hang in a home office prayer space?
A scene rather than a slogan, so the wall does not talk back at you all day. The 30x40 cm sits well above a desk or beside a window, close enough to look at when you stop for a minute. It reads as a quiet map, not as an instruction.
4.Will it look like a religious poster in a kitchen?
There is no lettering on it, only the field, the root and the one pale figure. Most guests see an aerial landscape and ask where it is from, and the owner answers in her own words. The verse reference is the anchor for whoever wants it.
