I Have Found My Sheep

Luke 15:6Living room

$24.00
Some Sundays the seat beside you stays empty, and you do not say much about it. You just keep praying. Above the sofa there is a hillside seen from above: ninety-nine left standing in a field, and one small white shape found in a clearing far along the path. It is where you put the prayer you say every day, so the room holds it with you and you are not carrying it alone. Guests stop in front of the hill and ask what it is, and you get to tell it in your own words.

Living room bible verse wall art Luke 15 lost sheep

Somebody went back for the one that stopped

The hill is drawn from a little above, the way you would see it if you had climbed the next ridge. Green folds, a thin path that bends twice, and ninety-nine pale shapes standing together in the corner of a field.

Far along that path, one small white shape is lying down in a clearing, and a figure is still walking toward it. The distance is the whole picture. In the evening, when the room is quiet and the worry starts up again, there is somewhere to set it down.

People read it differently in front of you. One sees a shepherd who walked a long way for one animal. One sees the one that stopped and was found lying down. One sees a whole flock left standing while somebody goes back. Nobody agrees, and nobody has to, and it still looks like real art on the main wall rather than something from a church shop.

Roads seen from above

I keep coming back to the distance. From up here the flock is a handful of pale marks in one corner of the field, and the path leaves them and bends twice before it reaches the clearing. You can measure that walk with your eye.

The one that stopped is lying down. It is not walking back, and nothing is being asked of it. I look at the small white mark, then at the space still left between it and the figure on the path, and I am glad the space is honest. What I hope this hill gives the room it hangs in is the sense that far is only far, never too far, and that the going back has already started.

Two women choose this one

One buys it for herself. She prays in the time before sleep, when the house is finally still and the worry is loudest, and she has been saying the same name to God for years without telling the whole room about it. The hill goes up where she can see it from her chair.

The other buys it for a friend from her prayer group, a woman praying for a grown child of her own. That friend is hard to buy for. She will tell you she has everything she needs and no space for more stuff, and then she will stand in front of this one for a long time.

It hangs above the sofa, usually the 60x80 cm, often as the left half of a pair with the crossing map.

Before it goes up on the wall

1.What does the parable of the lost sheep mean?
It is Luke 15:4-6, where a shepherd leaves ninety-nine in the open country, goes after the one that is missing, and carries it home on his shoulders. Readers hear it differently: some hear the leaving, some hear the carrying, some hear the counting that came first. This piece holds the hillside open and lets you say what you hear in it.
2.What christian art works in a living room without looking churchy?
A scene rather than a slogan. Here there is a hillside seen from above, a bending path and one small white accent, with the reference line as the only text, so a guest who does not share the faith sees a landscape and asks about it. The faces are left out, which keeps the reading yours rather than decided for you.
3.How do you hang a pair of prints above a sofa?
Centre the pair on the sofa, not on the wall, and keep the gap between the two frames narrow, about a hand's width. Hang them so the middle of the pair sits near eye level when you are standing. At 60x80 cm each, this one usually takes the left side, with the crossing map on the right.
4.What can you say when you give this to someone praying for a grown child?
Keep it short and let the picture do the rest. Something like: I think of you and your son when I look at this one. Women in prayer groups often give it without a card, and the friend understands straight away.
