I Will Give You Rest

Matthew 11:28Bedroom

$24.00
Some nights the house goes quiet and your head does not. Everyone else is asleep, and you are lying there at two in the morning, praying because you have run out of other ideas. Above the headboard there is a print of figures coming up a slope at the end of a long day, and one of them is bending toward the woman who sat down and could not get up again. Nothing in it hurries. It gives you somewhere to rest your eyes until sleep comes back. The friend who stays in your room asks what the story is, and you tell her.

Bedroom christian wall art

Somewhere to look at when the lamp goes out

The wall above the bed is the last thing you see with the light off and the first thing in the grey hour before anyone else wakes. What is up there is a picture, not a sentence, so there is nothing to read and nothing asked of you.

Figures come up a diagonal in low colour, heavy from the day. One white shape has already turned back toward the one who stopped walking, and the distance between them is small. On the worst nights it is company more than decoration, and the room stays quiet around it.

One friend sees people coming in at the end of a long day with someone waiting at the door for them. Another sees a woman who sat down and could not get up, and the one who came to her. Someone else calls it a walk that ends with a hand on your shoulder. Nobody has to agree. It reads as a painting over the bed, and that is what the house keeps of it.

The light starts with the one who turned

Arrivals and still places

I keep going back to the white figure. It is not at the front and it is not far away. It has simply turned, and the light seems to begin there rather than fall on it. The ones climbing are heavy, and you can see it in the way they lean. The one who sat down is low and close to the ground, close to being reached.

What holds me is that the hand has not arrived yet. One step is still missing, and it will be taken. I hope the woman who lies under this at night finds her room a little less loud, and that the last thing she looks at before the dark is something already on its way toward her.

Bedroom scripture print gift

Two women, one wall above the bed

One woman buys it for herself in a run of bad nights. Her anxiety is worst at night and she uses the time before sleep to pray, so the wall she faces then should show people arriving heavy and being met, not a line telling her to be calm.

The other buys it for a friend going through a wilderness season. She hands it over with nothing explained and no card about why the season is hard. Nothing ceremonial, only something to hang and keep.

It hangs above the headboard, often on the left of a pair as one two-print wall, and the 60x80 cm framed size holds a double bed without crowding the room.

What arrives at the door

  • 170 gsm paper Matte uncoated as a print only sheet, coated silk inside the frame. No shine under a bedside lamp.
  • 12 mm black wood frame Flat square profile, 22 mm deep, matte finish, plexiglass front, no mat, the picture running to the inner edge.
  • Three sizes 30x40 cm, 45x60 cm and 60x80 cm. In inches, 12x16, 18x24 and 24x32.
  • Giclee print Printed to the edges, so the slope and the low sky keep going to the very edge of the sheet.
In a hard season

Before it goes above the headboard

1.Where does Matthew 11:28 come from in the Bible?
It sits in the eleventh chapter of Matthew, where Jesus speaks to a crowd of people who labour and are heavy laden. The print carries the King James words, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. The scene was chosen for the arriving rather than the speaking, so the meaning stays yours to tell.
2.Is Matthew 11 wall art a good gift for a tired mother?
It suits a woman in a season of doing everything for everyone, which is why most people choose it. If you are giving it, you can say you thought of her when you saw the figure who came out to meet them. That says enough without turning into advice.
3.Where should I hang a Matthew 11:28 print in the living room?
On the wall she faces when she finally sits down, which is usually the long wall above a sideboard or behind the sofa. The 60x80 cm holds that wall on its own. It also pairs quietly with one other piece if you want to build a two print wall.
4.Does this print really look like a watercolour?
The giclee printing holds the soft edges and the pale washes, so the wet look of the original stays visible up close. On the matte uncoated sheet there is no gloss, which is what usually gives a print away. Guests tend to read it as a painting first and ask about the story second.
