The path ends at water, and the water is in your own field
Mid-morning the light crosses the long wall before it reaches anything else, and the small line under the fields reads Psalm 16:6. A year ago this room belonged to somebody else.
From the far end of the room it is land seen from above: soft greens, a dry gold, thin pale lines laid between the fields by a careful hand. A track bends twice and stops at a spring, and the spring is the only blue in it. Nothing in the picture is in a hurry. What it gives you is one wall in the house that says, without raising its voice, that this was given.
One friend calls it a family plot, measured out and handed over. Another looks at it longer and sees everything she was given and did not earn. Somebody always points at the water, because the track ends at water and the water sits inside your own fence line. None of them are wrong, and all of it is said quietly, which is the kind of home you keep.

The husband who remembers the date

One woman buys it for herself the month the boxes are finally unpacked, when the rooms stop being a project and start being a house. Trusting in the Lord turned out to be a real verb thing, and this is the year she can see it from where she sits.
The other buyer is her husband, on the anniversary of the day the offer was accepted. He is not good with that kind of sentence out loud, and this is silent but very effective and better than words. He writes the date small on the back before he wraps it.
It hangs on the long wall above the sofa, the 60x80 cm framed size, often as the pair to a valley landscape.
