It Is the Lord

John 21:7Hallway

$24.00
Some days you are the one who feeds everyone. The coats come off, the bags land by the door, and the kitchen starts again before you have sat down. On the entry wall, above the key shelf, there is a print of pale water with boats scattered across it and one out on its own. Down at the edge of the sand a small fire is already lit. Coming home counts for something here, not only going out. A guest who does not pray stops in front of it and asks about the fire, and you get to say what it means to you.

Kitchen scripture print gift John 21

Someone was already on the shore before anyone asked

From across the hall it is mostly water. Pale, flat, the kind of grey the sky goes just before it turns. The boats sit scattered, all of them small, and one is out further than the rest with its net fanned off the right side. Down in the corner, where the sand starts, there is a fire of coals no bigger than a thumbprint.

That fire is why the piece works where you pass it twice a day. Nobody in the scene is being asked anything. Breakfast is made, the light is coming up, and the boats are still out. Living with it means the wall by the door says someone is already there, before the day gets explained to anyone.

People read it differently. One sees many boats and one alone, and says that is the week she has had. Another sees only the net, heavy off the right side, and the water under it. Another sees the small fire and the wet track coming up out of the water toward it, and goes quiet. Guests who do not share the faith ask about the fire first, which says something about the home it hangs in.

The whole sea bends toward one small fire

Roads seen from above

I keep looking at the distance. The far boats are almost nothing, marks on water that goes on past the edge. The one boat out on its own is a long way from the sand, and the net off its right side is the only heavy thing in the scene. Then, down at the shore, the fire. It is the smallest mark here and everything leans toward it.

What I keep finding is the track in the wet sand, coming up out of the water. Someone walked that short stretch, and it was the last stretch of a long night. I hope whoever lives with this keeps the shore in view on the days the water looks wide, and finds the fire already lit before they were near it.

Scripture print gift

The first meal in a new place

One woman buys it for her own first hallway. She cooked the first meal in the place last week and said the words over it, bless this home and protect our family, and now she wants the wall by the door to hold that. She passes it with a bag on each arm and does not stop, and it still does its work.

The other buys it for someone else. A wedding, a housewarming, or simply for the woman who keeps cooking for everyone and says she truly does not want stuff, she has everything she needs and no space for more. This is one nail and one quiet scene, and it says something on the mornings when she is the first one up. The note that goes with it can be short: new mercies, every single morning.

It hangs in the hallway, left of the doorway piece and above the key shelf, the third piece on that one entry wall, where the 45x60 cm framed size sits best.

What people ask about the shore

1.What is the story of Jesus making breakfast on the shore?
It sits at the end of John's gospel, in John 21. Seven of the disciples had fished all night and caught nothing, then cast the net on the right side of the boat and could not haul it in, and one of them said, It is the Lord. When they came in to land there was a fire of coals on the sand with fish on it, and bread. The piece holds that daybreak and leaves the reading to you.
2.What scripture print is good for a dining wall?
A scene where a meal is already made tends to suit the place people eat. This one is water, boats and one small fire on the sand, so it reads as sea and shore to a guest and as John 21 to anyone who knows it. Above a sideboard or a long table, the 45x60 cm works; on a wider wall the 60x80 cm holds its own.
3.What is a good christian wedding gift for the kitchen?
Something small enough for a first home and quiet enough to live with for years. A couple's first hallway or kitchen wall usually has one nail free, and this framed 45x60 cm fills it without asking for a whole room. It suits the woman who will be doing the cooking, and a short card is enough: someone is already there in the morning.
4.Is this too religious for a guest who does not believe?
There are no faces and no lettering across it, only pale water, scattered boats and one fire of coals. Most guests see a sea and ask about the small fire first. Then the answer is yours to give, in your own words, as long or as short as you like.
