Known in Breaking of Bread

Luke 24:30Study and small group

$24.00
Tuesday evening, and you are setting out the mugs again before anyone arrives. It is your table now, in a house that still feels new, and you have wondered more than once whether anyone here really knows you. Right of the bookcase there is a print of three people at a table, and one of them has just seen something. The wall by the table holds what happens at the table. Guests stop in front of it and ask what is going on in the picture, and you get to answer in your own words.

Kitchen scripture print gift Luke 24

Somebody at that table has just seen it

From across the room it is three people at a low table, sitting close, the light pooled somewhere near the middle of them. A loaf has been broken and a piece of it is being handed across. One of the three has gone completely still.

Nothing in it is explained to you. On the evenings when the talk goes further than anyone planned, the picture is already quiet about it, and the room can hold what it holds.

One person who sat under it said it was simply bread being passed round. Somebody else said the one on the left had just worked something out. A friend who does not share the faith said it looked like a stranger who turned out to be known, and wanted the rest of the story. Three readings, one wall, and a house where that kind of question is welcome.

The light starts at the bread, not at the window

Arrivals and still places

The light does not come from the window here. It gathers at the hands in the middle of the table, on the broken half of a loaf, and the pale figure seems to be where it starts rather than where it lands. I keep looking at the one on the left. All movement has stopped there. The cup is still lifted, and forgotten.

Nothing has been said yet. That is what holds me, the half second before someone speaks, when the room has changed and no one has caught up to it. I hope whoever hangs this keeps finding that half second at their own table, on an ordinary evening, with the plates not yet cleared.

Scripture print gift

The table that fed everyone all term

One woman bought it for herself. First term hosting in the new house, mugs out at seven, and the old question sitting underneath the evening: why is church the hardest place to get to know someone. It went up before the last boxes were unpacked.

The other was bought by six people at the end of a term, for the family whose table they sit round every week. She had told them she truly did not want stuff, that she has everything she needs. It is as much a support group as a Bible study, they wrote in the card, and the picture says the same thing without saying it.

It hangs right of the bookcase at seated eye level, above the low table, the 45x60 cm framed size finishing the three-piece study wall.

What people ask before they choose

1.What is a good Christian housewarming gift for a kitchen?
Something that belongs to the room where people actually gather, rather than another object on a shelf. A picture of a shared table sits naturally by a dining wall or a small group corner, and it gives the host something to talk about the first time guests sit down. The 45x60 cm framed size suits most kitchen and study walls at seated eye level.
2.What happened on the road to Emmaus?
Luke 24 tells of two followers walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus, joined on the road by a stranger who talks with them the whole way. They ask him to stay for supper, and at the table he takes the bread, blesses it, breaks it and hands it round. That table is the moment in this scene. What it means is left with the person living with it.
3.What size print goes beside a dining table?
Beside a table, the picture is usually read while sitting, so hang it lower than you would in a hallway. The 45x60 cm size works over a low table or between a bookcase and a doorway. The 60x80 cm suits a long, uninterrupted wall, and the 30x40 cm fits a narrow stretch or a gallery group.
4.Will guests who do not share the faith understand the picture?
They see three people at a table and something passing between them, which is enough to start a conversation. The figures have no faces, so nobody is told what to feel about the scene. The reference line is the only anchor, and the rest of the answer is yours to give in your own words.
