New Every Morning

Lamentations 3:23Bedroom

$24.00
Some mornings you are awake before the house is, sitting on the edge of the bed with the whole day already lined up ahead of you. Above the bed head there is a woman with her head down and someone bending to take her hands, and the room around them is still. You get to look at it for a minute before your feet reach the floor. It is the one steady thing in the room on the mornings you wake up already behind. Your sister says it looks like a real painting, not a line of lettering telling her how to feel about today.

Kitchen bible verse wall art Lamentations 3

Someone has come all the way down to the floor

From across the room it reads as colour before anything else: a warm grey wash, soft ochre, a room with its edges left unfinished, figures who could belong to any house. Then you see her. She is sitting with her head down and her hands loose in her lap, the way anyone sits at the end of a month that took more than it gave.

The tall figure has come all the way down to the floor to reach her. Nothing is asked of her. You can look at it for as long as one breath takes, and it will not tell you to be further along than you are.

People see different things in it. One woman sees a woman with her head down and someone waiting at her hands. Her husband sees a tall figure bending the whole way to the floor. Her sister only ever notices the friend in the background, folding cloth, letting the two of them be. Nobody has to agree, and that is part of why the wall stays interesting. A guest stops in front of it, asks about it, and you get to answer in your own words.

The space between the reaching hand and the floor

Arrivals and still places

The light comes in low and finds her hands first. Everything else stays soft, the walls barely there, the morning not quite arrived. I keep looking at the space between the tall figure and the floor. It is almost closed. One more inch and her hands would be held, and the whole picture waits inside that inch.

Behind them someone folds cloth and does not turn around. I like that she stays out of it. What I hope is simple: that whoever wakes under this one finds the room already gentle with her, that the day waits a moment at the door, and that the reaching is on its way before she has asked for anything.

Bought for her own wall, or wrapped without a word

One woman buys it for herself, in the middle of what she would call a wilderness season, because the mornings have been starting badly and she wants one thing in the room that is on her side.

The other is a husband with a wife who says she truly does not want stuff, she has everything she needs, she has no space for more. Or a woman from Bible study who writes on the card that she hopes her friend sees the new mercies of Christ every single morning. Both of them are handing over the same thing, which is a minute of quiet, hung where she will find it.

It goes centred above the bed head, the largest of three pieces on that one wall, at the height where her eyes land when she sits up.

Morning quiet

What people ask before it goes up

1.What bible verse is good for a kitchen wall?
Lamentations 3:22-23 sits well on a wall you pass in the first hour of the day: his compassions fail not, they are new every morning. It is short, it is not an instruction, and it holds up over a kettle at seven in the morning. On this piece the reference sits under the scene rather than in lettering across it.
2.What does his mercies are new every morning mean?
The line comes from Lamentations 3, in the middle of a book of grief, which is part of why people hold on to it. We leave the meaning where it belongs, with you and the verse. What we can say is that women who live with this piece read it differently on different mornings, and it stays open to all of them.
3.What art works on a small kitchen wall beside the clock?
Something quiet, mostly one temperature of colour, so it does not compete with the clock and the calendar already on that wall. The 30x40 cm size is made for a narrow strip like that. From across the room it reads as a painting, not as a sign.
4.Is this a good gift for a mother who says she wants nothing?
It is one of the few things that does not add clutter to a house that already has enough in it. It goes on a wall she looks at anyway, and it says nothing about how she should feel today. Husbands and Bible study friends are the two people who choose this one most.
5.Which size works above a bed?
60x80 cm framed, centred above the bed head, is how it was imagined: the largest of three pieces on one wall, at eye height when she sits up. 45x60 cm suits a narrower headboard or a wall shared with photographs. 30x40 cm is better for a hallway or a small kitchen.
