The room you sit in every evening holds the turn of it
From across the room it reads as distance first. A flat plain the colour of dust, a sky that has not rained in a long while, ground cracked into pale plates. Nothing in it is hurrying.
Then, low and to one side, the flowers. Small, a handful, at the foot of one shrub, and no one put them there. Live with it a while and the picture stops being about how dry the land is. The turn is already in the room, and the room keeps it for you.
People read it three ways. One friend sees only the plain and how long it has been that way. Another goes straight to the first flowering and stays there. Someone always finds the figure far off at the edge of the land and wants to know who is walking. None of those readings gets corrected in your house, which is the quiet most rooms never manage.
I keep looking at the low corner, where the flowers are
The light in this one comes from low down, and it finds the flowers before it finds anything else. I keep looking at that corner. A handful of small blooms at the foot of a shrub, and all that pale ground behind them, still holding the heat of a long dry stretch. The plain has not changed yet. It is about to.
Far off at the edge of the land there is someone walking, one step from being close enough to see what has happened here. I like it there, just before. My hope is that the room where this hangs stays easy about waiting, and that whoever passes it in the evening finds the flowers first, the way the light does.
