One boat went out while the others stayed on the sand
From across the room it reads as water first. Then the shore comes up: a pale rim of sand, boats drawn up on it and left there, and out past them one small boat with the wake still behind it. The far side is a thin line near the top. You are looking down on all of it, the way you would from a hill above the lake.
What that gives the room is simple. On the evenings when the news is bad and everyone ends up on this sofa, there is a quiet sea over your heads and no hurry anywhere in it. Nothing in it promises the crossing will be easy. Only that the other side is where the boat is going, and it is already most of the way.
People see it differently. One counts the water behind the boat instead of the water ahead and calls it a crossing that is already halfway done. Another looks at the boats still on the sand and thinks about the one that went. A guest who does not go to church sees a calm sea from above and asks where you found it. Water so still you cannot tell what it did last night, someone said once, and that is the kind of room this has become.

When a card is too small and the casserole is covered

One woman buys it for herself. She is in the middle of a year she did not choose, and she is still the one getting everyone into the car on a Sunday morning. The storm is strong and some weeks it seems that Jesus is sleeping, and she has learned by now that God is acting anyway. She wants something over the sofa that is not a slogan.
The other is the friend. The freezer is already full, the card felt too small, and she knows the house has enough things in it, that nobody there wants more stuff. So she sends the crossing instead and writes one line inside: the boat is further along than it looks from the shore.
It hangs above the sofa, the 60x80 cm going up to the right of the hillside map, the second half of a pair that reads left to right.
