Unto the Other Side

Mark 4:35Living room

$24.00
Some years you did not choose. This is one of them, and the room where everyone lands after church is the same room where the hard things get said out loud. Above the sofa there is a crossing seen from above: water, a shoreline, boats pulled up on the sand, one small boat already more than halfway out. Nobody in it is turning back. It gives the room a calm piece of water to look at while you talk. Friends stop in front of it and ask about it, and your faith comes up without anyone feeling cornered.

Living room scripture print gift Mark 4

One boat went out while the others stayed on the sand

From across the room it reads as water first. Then the shore comes up: a pale rim of sand, boats drawn up on it and left there, and out past them one small boat with the wake still behind it. The far side is a thin line near the top. You are looking down on all of it, the way you would from a hill above the lake.

What that gives the room is simple. On the evenings when the news is bad and everyone ends up on this sofa, there is a quiet sea over your heads and no hurry anywhere in it. Nothing in it promises the crossing will be easy. Only that the other side is where the boat is going, and it is already most of the way.

People see it differently. One counts the water behind the boat instead of the water ahead and calls it a crossing that is already halfway done. Another looks at the boats still on the sand and thinks about the one that went. A guest who does not go to church sees a calm sea from above and asks where you found it. Water so still you cannot tell what it did last night, someone said once, and that is the kind of room this has become.

Half the water is already behind them

Roads seen from above

I keep coming back to how much water is already behind the small boat. From up here you can measure it: a little more than half the crossing done, the shore it left gone soft at the edges, the far side still only a line. The other boats stay where they were pulled up on the sand. Nobody drew them wrong. They simply did not go out.

What holds me is the calm. From this height you cannot tell what the water did in the night, and I like that it does not say. I hope whoever lives with this looks up on a bad afternoon, finds the boat further along than she remembered, and lets the rest of the distance stay a distance for a while.

When a card is too small and the casserole is covered

One woman buys it for herself. She is in the middle of a year she did not choose, and she is still the one getting everyone into the car on a Sunday morning. The storm is strong and some weeks it seems that Jesus is sleeping, and she has learned by now that God is acting anyway. She wants something over the sofa that is not a slogan.

The other is the friend. The freezer is already full, the card felt too small, and she knows the house has enough things in it, that nobody there wants more stuff. So she sends the crossing instead and writes one line inside: the boat is further along than it looks from the shore.

It hangs above the sofa, the 60x80 cm going up to the right of the hillside map, the second half of a pair that reads left to right.

What people ask about this crossing

1.What verse is peace be still from?
It is Mark 4:39, spoken in the same boat as this scene. Jesus is asleep in the stern, the disciples wake him, and he speaks to the wind and the sea. This piece takes its line from a few verses earlier, Mark 4:35, let us pass over unto the other side.
2.What bible verse do you give someone going through a storm?
Mark 4:35 travels well, because it does not tell anyone the crossing will be short. He did not say it would be easy, he said let us go over to the other side. If you are writing a card with it, that one sentence is usually enough on its own.
3.What two prints hang well together in a living room?
Two pieces from the same hand, at the same size, read as one wall instead of two decisions. This crossing is made as the second half of a pair with the hillside map, hung to its right, a hand's width apart. At 60x80 cm each they sit comfortably over a standard sofa.
4.Will a picture about a storm feel heavy in the room where we relax?
The water in it is calm, seen from above, with no faces and no weather. Most guests read it first as a quiet sea and only ask about the story afterwards. It is a piece you can talk about when you want to, and simply look at when you do not.
