White Already to Harvest

John 4:35Study and small group

$24.00
Ten terms in, you are the one who remembers the tea, the chairs, the person who missed last week. Above the desk, to the right of the bookcase, there is a field on a slope with one sheaf bound and set apart, and nobody has come up the path yet. It is one thing on the wall, not one more thing to find room for, and the room is quieter for it. People stop in front of it before they sit down and ask where it came from, and you answer in your own words.

John 4 wall art

The work nobody counted is standing in the field

From across the room it is mostly field. Closer in, the slope has weather in it: pale heads bent one way, a track worn brown up the middle, a fence line thinning out near the top. One sheaf stands bound and a little apart, holding more light than anything else on the hill.

Nothing in it is hurrying. It hangs there through the weeks when you are behind on everything, and it never adds itself to the list. You look up, the field is still ready, and the room settles.

One friend says it is a field ready and nobody there yet. Someone else only ever sees the one sheaf, bound and set apart from the rest. Somebody at the table says it is the path, the one a person walked up this slope every day for months. Nobody agrees, the picture holds all of it, and the corner of the house you keep for reading looks like a corner somebody thought about.

Arrivals and still places

The light comes over the slope before anyone does. It finds the top of the field first, then the one sheaf standing apart from the rest, and it stays there longer than anywhere else. The path is worn. Someone walked it every day for a long season, and this morning the field is ready and the path is empty, and I keep waiting for the moment a figure comes up over the rise.

What I hope is this: that whoever hangs it looks up from her desk in the middle of something long and slow, and sees that the field filled while nobody was counting. That the waiting part is not the empty part.

Small group leader gift

Nine people and one thing to give

The last week of a term, a group chat, and somebody typing that she truly does not want stuff, she has everything she needs and no space for more. She has a shelf of mugs to prove it. So one framed piece instead of a basket, chosen because she would have chosen it herself, and a card that says what the year in that living room was.

The other woman who buys this buys it in January, for herself, before anyone comes back. It is as much a support group as a study, that room, and most of the work in it has been hers. The print goes up while the new books are still in the bag.

It hangs above the desk, to the right of the bookcase, 45x60 cm framed, or as one wall with two smaller figure pieces beside it.

What people ask before it goes on the wall

1.What does John 4:35 say about the fields being white already to harvest?
The line sits in John 4, in the hour after Jesus speaks with the woman at the well in Samaria. He tells the disciples to lift up their eyes and look on the fields. The print keeps the field and the light and leaves the rest where it was found, so the reading stays yours.
2.Is this a good gift for a small group or Bible study leader?
It was made for that week. Most leaders end a term with another mug and another candle, and many of them will tell you plainly that they have no space for more. One framed piece, given by the whole group, hangs where she actually works and stays past the term.
3.Where does a harvest field print hang in a study or home office?
Above the desk, to the right of a bookcase, is where it does the most. It sits well as one wall with two smaller figure pieces beside it. A reading corner works too, hung at eye level from the chair rather than from standing.
4.What size print works above a desk or a bookcase?
45x60 cm framed is the usual choice above a desk, large enough to read as one piece without crowding the shelves. 30x40 cm suits a narrow strip of wall or a grouping. 60x80 cm is for a wall you see from the doorway.
5.Will it still look like art to someone who does not share the faith?
Nothing in it announces itself. A guest sees a slope, a worn path and one bound sheaf, and usually asks about it. The reference line is there for anyone who wants it, and you answer in your own words.
