Mary Sat at His Feet

Luke 10:39Study and small group

$24.00
January comes and you clear a corner: a chair, a lamp, the new plan you mean to read all the way through this year. Above it hangs a picture of two women and an open doorway. One of them has sat down while there is still work to do, and nobody in the room is telling her to get up. It is the one corner of the house that is not asking you for anything. Friends read it as two women and a doorway long before they read it as scripture, and then they ask, and you get to tell them what it means to you.

Somebody sat down while the plates waited

Late in the evening, when the kitchen is finally dark, the lamp beside the chair is the only light left on. From there it sits at eye level, near enough to read and far enough to take in all at once.

Two women, no faces. One is seated low on the floor, turned toward whoever is speaking, her back long and easy. The other stands a step inside the doorway with her hands still full, and the light behind her lays a pale line along the boards between them. Nobody is being corrected. What it gives you is a chair that stays a chair, and not one more place where you are needed.

People say different things about it. One friend sees a woman who sat down when there was work to do. Another sees the sister arriving with her hands full, still in motion. Somebody else sees only the leaning, someone bent forward a little to catch what is being said. No one has ever asked for an explanation, and the corner it hangs in says what kind of house this is: quiet on purpose, and not by accident.

Arrivals and still places

The light does not come from the window. It gathers on the seated one, low and close to the floor, and I keep thinking she is the source of it rather than the room. Then it reaches the doorway, where the other woman stands one step inside, her hands not yet empty. That step is what I look at most. The arrival that has not finished arriving.

There is a small distance between them, two floorboards at most, and nothing in the scene closes it. I like that it stays open. What I hope is plain: that whoever lives with this finds her own chair beneath it, and that on some ordinary morning she stays in it longer than she meant to, with nothing at all going wrong.

The one who feeds everybody, and the ones she feeds

One woman buys it for herself, usually in January, the week she claims a corner of the house. She has a chair now, a lamp, and a scripture for the day to rest on and pray on. She has served in every room of this house and has never once been the one sitting down.

The other buyer is a group of women choosing something for the one who hosts them. She cooks for them every Thursday, and it is as much a support group as a Bible study, they have found. She keeps saying she wants nothing, that the house has enough stuff in it already, and this is the one thing that is not stuff.

It hangs left of the bookcase, above the reading chair, the largest size framed when it is the middle of a three-piece study wall.

What people ask before they choose

1.What verse should I hang in my prayer corner?
Many people choose a verse about sitting down rather than doing more. Luke 10:39 is one of those: Mary sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. If the corner is the one place you stop, a scene of someone stopping tends to suit it better than a line of instruction.
2.What does Mary sat at his feet mean in Luke 10?
Luke 10 tells of two sisters in Bethany, one busy with much serving and one sitting to listen. This piece stays with the sitting: a woman on the floor, a figure in white, someone still moving behind them. The meaning is left to you. Some read it as rest, some as attention, some as being allowed to stop.
3.What art suits a small home study wall?
A small wall usually does better with one large, quiet piece with a lot of breathing room than with a cluster of frames. Above a low dresser or a narrow desk, the 45x60 cm framed size reads as intentional without crowding the room. The 30x40 cm suits a shelf ledge or the strip of wall beside a door.
4.Will it look like church shop decor?
The figures are faceless and painted in soft watercolour, and the verse reference sits quietly instead of filling the frame. Most people ask who painted it before they notice the scripture. It reads as art first, which is what makes it easy to live with in a bedroom.
