Bible Verses for the Kitchen, From the Meals Scripture Remembers

The best Bible verses for a kitchen come from the meals the Bible actually describes. Most lists repeat a few verses about generosity and hospitality, and they are good ones. But scripture is full of real kitchens: bread broken at a table, fish cooked on a fire at dawn, a meal left beside someone too tired to go on.
Here are the kitchen verses we find hold up best on a wall, the story behind each, and practical advice on where scripture art goes in a kitchen so it survives the steam.
Where to hang it
- Beside, not above, the hob Steam and splashes shorten the life of any print. The wall beside the table or by the kettle is safer.
- Where you pause By the kettle, above the counter where you wait, or opposite the chair you drink your coffee in.
- Behind a front A framed print with a plexiglass front wipes clean, which matters in a kitchen more than anywhere.
- One piece, not a set A single picture with room around it reads as art. Several verse signs in a row read as a shop display.
"Come and dine", John 21:12
The disciples had fished all night and caught nothing. On the shore at dawn there was already a fire of coals with fish on it, and bread, and the invitation: "Come and dine."
It is the gentlest breakfast in scripture, and the one we would hang first in a kitchen that feeds a lot of people.

"Arise and eat", 1 Kings 19:7

Elijah had asked to die. Instead he woke to find "a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head," and was told, "Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee."
Before God asked him to do anything, he fed him. For whoever does all the feeding in a house, this is a verse about being looked after too.
"Abide with us", Luke 24:29
Two travellers on the road to Emmaus asked a stranger to stay for supper, "for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." At the table, when he broke the bread, they recognised him.
It is the verse for a kitchen that always sets one more place.

"His compassions fail not", Lamentations 3:22

"His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." The kitchen is where most mornings begin, before anyone else is up.
Hang it by the kettle or the coffee, where you stand and wait while the day starts.
"A well of water springing up", John 4:14
At a well at midday, Jesus told a woman drawing water about "a well of water springing up into everlasting life." It began with an ordinary household errand.
For the sink, the counter, the place where the ordinary work of a house gets done, it is a verse about the quiet that can be found in the middle of it.

"I am the vine", John 15:5

Spoken on the night of the last supper: "I am the vine, ye are the branches." Vines, fruit and wine run all through the meals of scripture.
It suits the wall beside a dining table, where a family gathers and stays connected at the end of each day.
The kitchen verses on most lists
Proverbs 11:25 on the generous person being refreshed, 1 Peter 4:9 on hospitality without grumbling, and "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11) turn up on almost every list of kitchen verses, and for good reason. Acts 2:46 describes the first believers eating "with gladness and singleness of heart", which is a fine verse for any table.
What they have in common is that they are instructions. The verses above are stories instead, which is why they work as pictures rather than as lettering.
